An HSI Panel Discussion

Continuing Nursing Education: 2.0 Contact Hours

Abstract

For centuries, it has been believed that cleaning, disinfecting, and, when required, sterilization is the silver bullet that will reduce infection rates. Data shows an entirely different story. Despite disinfection efforts in healthcare facilities, a hidden world where microbes lurk in places and devices continues to spread life-threatening infections.

Multi-modal issues require multi-modal solutions, but recommended solutions are difficult to achieve because the root causes are misunderstood, ignored, and not considered part of the problem. Our panelists will discuss their experience with these issues, including:

  • A lack of knowledge about basic microbiology.
  • A lack of regulatory requirements that test products and materials for compatibility using standard healthcare-grade disinfectants.
  • Manufacturer’s instructions for use (IFUs) conflict with infection prevention cleaning and disinfection guidelines.
  • The selection of surface materials in the design phase does not prioritize cleaning and disinfection.

The discussion will begin with 15-minute presentations in each presenter’s area of expertise, followed by an interactive moderated discussion and Q&A with the audience. This is the first event of a year-long series focused on collaborative, multi-modal solutions to reduce HAI spread via surfaces. Click here to register!

Learning Objectives

  • Educate participants on all the challenges healthcare professionals face working to mitigate the spread of infections within our healthcare facilities.
  • Build bridges of understanding and open lines of communication.
  • Create a consortium of professionals willing to work together to find sustainable multi-modal solutions.
